how many ........ to change a light bulb

no this is not a joke.......thought i'd have a go at something simple.....tried to change the dipped headlight bulb on my 530 touring E34.....it seems you are meant to unscrew the back of the headlight unit...thing is it wont budge .....do i use brute force or is there a very expensive bmw tool i have to use....any help appreciated and i promise to make the next enquiry more interesting......cheers ....jasper
