I have just realised that none of the E34's came from the factory fitted with radios so i think someone must have requested that the dealer install that particular system in your car when they purchased it ?
On the original invoice for my car it says :
Install Stereo and Fit 4 Speakers £695.86 !!!!

Interesting .. I will have a look through all the paperwork I got with my car but i'm pretty sure there isn't the original invoice for the car ...there is an invoice for replacing an amp under the glovebox though
Isn't there somewhere on the web where i can type my VIN in and it will tell me what spec my car was out of the factory or can a dealer do it ?

I would have thought that whoever installed (BMW dealer ?) the original system would have left the original wiring in place as it is part of the cars wiring loom and that they would have just run new cables from the amps to the speakers....It would be easy enough to check, if you remove the passenger side kick panel and speaker you will be able to see if the original wiring is still in place....

fitted a new head unit to mine today had to chop out a nasty pionear pullout stereo with what i thought was a changer lead wired in my new one and had no rear speakers thought i would be clever and cut into the dimm loom and try to rewire big mistake!!!!!!
i ended up wiring the fronts as normal then installing a cheapy amp (running the rca wires was a nightmare as these cars are built right!!!!) to run the rears all in all not what i wanted still makes puttin a sub in all that easier!!!

my stereo was fitted by the suppling dealer according to the bill of sale inc an amp, when i fitted my own system i found the leads to be different to the pacth leads i brought from halfords, so i traced the cars stereo loom back to the amp and found rolled up on top of the brace bar were the glove box lives a second set of leads,so i removed the speaker lead plug from the amp pluged it in to the female end of these leads, then traced the other end back to under centre consel which did fit the halfords leads, then pluged the halfords leads into my stereo,s leads and bobs your uncle it all worked perfectly..

Update ..... after being quoted a £120 'cos we would have to re-wire the car mate' from a specialist I decided to give the guy who fitted my alarm a bell . He came round and we dound the original BMW connector up above the glovebox along with a pioneer amp so we removed that and found the front speaker wires , then removed the amp from the boot and found the original speaker wires for the rears under the seat , so rewired them back into the standard wiring loom and bobs your uncle ...it took 2 hours cost ....50 quid so i'm happy , plus I now know where all wires go etc

Well thats what I thought I would have to do but i was very pleasantly surprised with whats in there already , the sound quality is superb ..better than the Kenwood speakers I had in my E30 , so the only thing I might do at some point is put a sub and amp in , which wont be hard as the battery is under the back seat so I wont have to run loads of cables
